“Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”
~Hebrews 10:17 (NKJV)
Unless you live under a rock, you know that Donald Trump or Hilary Clinton will be the next president of the United States of America. There are other candidates running, but realistically, Trump and Clinton are the only two candidates that have a chance to win.
Honestly, I don’t like either of them, however, I will pray on it, then vote. People died to protect the freedoms we have in this country, including the right to vote, and I, for one, will never take that for granted.
As much as I don’t care for either candidate, it’s what we are stuck with. We all sin and fall short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23 NKJV) so unless Jesus’ name appears on that ballot, we will never have the perfect candidate. That said, I do give credit to both of them for running.
By placing themselves in the limelight, every sin, every mistake from their past, becomes mud to sling. Think back on your own life and I’m sure you can come up with a few mistakes, a few sins, that you would not want in the public eye.
Fortunately, God’s ways are higher than our ways (Isaiah 55:8-9 NKJV) and He tells us in His Word that he does not remember our sins. Once we choose to follow Jesus…not just believe He exists (even Satan does that) or be a fan of His work…but truly repent and turn our life over to Him, the Father sees us through His Son.
Jesus traded our sinfulness for His righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21 NKJV) so as followers of Jesus, He becomes our “filter.” When the Father looks at us, He sees the righteousness of His Son, which covers our sin. You are a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV). He changes you from the inside out and sees you just as His sees His beloved Son. That’s pretty incredible if you ask me!
Unlike the world, we never have to worry that God is going to throw our past back at us and remind us of the wrong we have done. When those highlight reels from your past start playing in your mind, be assured, it is not God who turned on the projector. It is the enemy, who is trying to steal your joy, trying to make you think that your past still defines you. (John 10:10 NKJV)
Fortunately, you and I are not running for President (unless, Donald or Hilary are reading this!) and most of us don’t have to worry about our “dirty laundry” being aired on the nightly news. As Christians, we can rejoice and praise God that His Son has washed us clean so that our past no longer defines us.
When the enemy starts slinging that mud, remember not your past but rather who you are in Christ today. While Trump and Clinton can’t seem to get away from their past indiscretions, praise God that ours are already forgotten by the only One who truly matters.
