Unless you live under a rock, you know that this week, Donald Trump became the President-elect of the United States. This has been the eighth Presidential election that I have voted in and I must say that it was the first time I didn’t like either candidate, not even a little bit.
As a Christian, I could not vote for Hilary Clinton based on her stances on abortion and marriage. I did not want to throw my vote away on a third party candidate who stood no chance of being elected, so, with trepidation, I cast my vote for Donald Trump. My vote was more of a vote against her than it was a vote for him.
There are many good people who supported and voted for Donald Trump, however, there are also many hateful people who jumped on the Trump bandwagon.
If you watch the highlight reels of the campaign, there is no denying that Mr. Trump can be a vulgar, hateful man. From mocking a disabled reporter to his disparaging remarks and attitude toward women, it is evident that he holds a great deal of hate in his heart.
In the days following the election, I have read many stories of vandalism including the painting of swastikas with the words “Make America White Again” and Muslim parents telling their children not to wear their hijab for fear of violence against them. The people who have been spewing hate since Trump’s victory were haters before the election; however, I believe they feel empowered by having a President-elect who has, in many ways, encouraged such behavior.
I was in McDonald’s yesterday, waiting in line for my food, when I saw a beautiful little girl dancing with her mother. The mother was openly singing to her daughter about Jesus and I couldn’t help but start a conversation with her. She, an African American woman, told me of her fear of what is to come in this country. She expressed anxiety for her young daughter. Her words were not a political statement. It was evident that her fear was very real.
The KKK in North Carolina announced plans this week for a victory parade on December 3rd to celebrate the win of our President-elect. Whether you like Trump or not, that is certainly cause for alarm.
So, what are our options? Move to another country? Sit back and just take whatever comes? I don’t think so. I think the answer can be found in 2 Chronicles 7:14. We need to humble ourselves before God, repent and pray.
We need to pray for our nation, for our President-elect, and for all of our elected officials. We need to pray that God softens the hearts of those who are intolerant and hateful.
Let us stand together and pray that the little girl in McDonald’s grows up in a nation where she is treated with respect and dignity.
May God bless and heal our land.
